The European Commission announced on Wednesday that it is allocating EUR 168.2 million to eight projects aimed at boosting European production of drones, missiles and ammunition. The projects are expected to attract EUR 1.26 billion in industrial investment, according to the statement.
The funded projects aim to speed up and scale up the production of components for these defence products. From next year, they are expected to cut production times by up to 90% and enable annual output of more than 20,000 tonnes of components, 3,500 propulsion systems for drones and missiles, 200,000 ammunition warheads and 60 million rounds of ammunition. The investment will support production at 17 sites across 14 EU member states and Norway, and help protect these facilities against growing physical and cyber threats, the Commission added.
The funding forms part of efforts to address immediate bottlenecks and expand ammunition production capacity following Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, the statement said.
The EU’s Act in Support of Ammunition Production (ASAP) has a total budget of EUR 1.5 billion, half of which is earmarked for expanding production capacity in the EU, Norway and Ukraine.
