EC Executive Vice-President Virkkunen Visits National STEM Centre

European Commission Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen visited the National STEM Centre in Sofia on Tuesday, the Education and Science Ministry said on its website.
Virkkunen is responsible for technological sovereignty, security and democracy.
Virkkunen toured some of the centre’s specialist laboratories and watched demonstrations of modern technologies, including one involving a humanoid robot. National STEM Centre Director Nayden Shivarov briefed her on opportunities for hands-on training for teachers and students, experimentation and innovative approaches to teaching science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The visit also drew international media attention, the Ministry noted. Photographs appeared on Reuters’ international media platform, while the European Commission published a photo gallery of the visit in its audiovisual library.
The stop at the centre was part of Virkkunen’s official visit to Bulgaria. Her programme included meetings with Prime Minister Rumen Radev, Minister of Innovation and Digital Transformation Ivan Vasilev and representatives of leading Bulgarian technology companies.
The National STEM Centre officially opened on September 29. Its high-tech building was constructed at Sofia Tech Park under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. It houses specialist laboratories, a room dedicated to artificial intelligence, a digital and audiovisual arts studio, and workshops for practical and applied work. The centre will be open to schools nationwide and will also provide modern facilities for training Bulgaria’s science Olympiad teams.
