Balgarianovinite.com The changing social, professional and personal roles of women during the socialist era are presented across five thematic lines in an exhibition titled “When She Was a Comrade: The urban woman during socialism”, which opens at the Sofia Regional History Museum on Wednesday, the hosts said.
The exhibition reconstructs the world of women in the 1944-1989 period. Based on the changing responsibilities of women in the family and in society, five thematic lines have been identified, the team said.
One of them examines the phenomenon of “politically dangerous women” – a term used in the context of the socialist system – presenting activities and behaviour considered anti-social, as well as the sanctions imposed. Two other themes are dedicated to women in the workforce and public participation, as during this period they entered new spheres of work and became actively involved in various organizations, the team said.
The personal sphere is presented through materials depicting the home environment, family life and leisure time. Visitors can see typical home interior styles for a living room, kitchen and bedroom, as well as photos and videos reflecting everyday life.
Fashion features prominently in the exhibition. The main trends across the five decades are examined, along with the structure of the socialist fashion industry.
The museum’s team has worked in partnership with the Committee for Disclosing Documents and Announcing Affiliation of Bulgarian Citizens to the State Security, the Bulgarian Visual Archive and the Bulgarian National Film Archive.
