Exhibition Marking 10th Anniversary of Bulgarian-Hungarian Friendship Day Opens in Budapest 2026

An exhibition dedicated to Bulgarian-Hungarian Friendship Day opened at the Barankovics Istvan office building in Budapest on Monday as part of the 21st World Meeting of Bulgarian Media, organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).
At the official opening, Hungary’s Deputy Commissioner for Fundamental Rights Laura Gyeney said that the centuries-long history of Bulgarians in Hungary reflects the image of a united and hardworking community that zealously preserves its identity and traditions. It serves as a role model not only for other national minorities but also for society as a whole, she added.
Marking the 10-year anniversary of Bulgarian-Hungarian Friendship Day, Gyeney extended special greetings to people of Bulgarian descent in Hungary and to the guests at the event. She also welcomed the representatives of Bulgarian institutions present.
“Although Bulgarian-Hungarian relations date back more than a millennium, ten years mark an important milestone even within this long history. This is a good occasion to look back on the relations between our peoples,” she said.
“The adoption of Christianity was a fateful event in the history of both nations. It guaranteed their survival and secured their place in Europe. Although the Bulgarians adopted the Eastern branch of Christianity and the Hungarians primarily its Western branch, the two countries maintained close relations,” Gyeney noted. As an example of the political ties between the two countries, she cited the alliance between Tsar Simeon the Great and Prince Arpad in the early 10th century.
She added that October 19 was chosen to mark Bulgarian-Hungarian relations for a reason: it is the feast day of Bulgaria’s patron saint, St John of Rila the Wonderworker.
Gyeney also recalled the life of Istvan Dunyov, also known as Stefan Dunyov, whom she described as a lesser-known figure in the shared history of the two countries. Born into a family of Banat Bulgarians, he took part in the Hungarian Revolution in 1848-1849. He later became a colonel under Giuseppe Garibaldi, and subsequently joined Lajos Kossuth in exile.
Gyeney also highlighted the settlement of Bulgarian gardeners in major Hungarian cities during the second half of the 19th century. This chapter of their shared history had a lasting impact on the development of vegetable production and culinary traditions in Hungary, she said.
Gyeney also spoke about her personal ties to Bulgaria and Bulgarian cuisine. She concluded her address by quoting the first chairman of the Association of Bulgarians in Hungary, Lazar Ivanov, who said that the future was built not only with a shovel, but also with faith in God and open eyes.
Following her speech, Gyeney invited the official guests and other attendees to view the exhibition.
BTA is organizing the 21st World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in Budapest and Esztergom, Hungary, on October 19 and 20, with the support of DSK Bank, OTP Group, Aurubis Bulgaria, A1, SOF Connect – the operator of Vasil Levski Sofia Airport, Geotechmin, Postbank and the 13 Centuries Bulgaria National Endowment Fund. This year’s meeting is mottoed “Media and Leaders”. The forum is expected to bring together participants from 25 countries, both in person and online.
