Exhibition Marking 150 Years Since April Uprising Opens at National Museum of History 2026

Balgarianovinite.com The exhibition “150 Years of the April Uprising: Stories and Narratives of a Heroic Era” was opened at the National Museum of History on Wednesday, on the date when the insurgents’ flag, sewn by Popgeorgieva Futekova (1856-1917), known as Rayna Knyaginya, was consecrated in Panagyurishte.
The exhibition was inaugurated by caretaker Culture Minister Nayden Todorov, Deputy Education Minister Natalia Mihalevska, the President’s Secretary for Culture, Education and Relations with Bulgarians Abroad, Milena Dimitrova, the President’s Adviser on Spirituality and Culture Plamen Slavov, the Museum’s Director Assoc. Prof. Boni Petrunova, Sofia University Rector Georgi Valchev, Head of the “History of Bulgaria during the National Revival, 18th–19th Centuries” Department at the Museum, Dimitar Vasilev, and Prof. Kiril Topalov.
Milena Dimitrova read a congratulatory address by President Iliana Iotova who said that the April Uprising proved that Bulgarians were no longer subjects without rights, but people with a voice, a history, and a future. “It is precisely their sense of duty and their self-sacrifice in the name of a sacred cause that illuminate our nation’s path to freedom,” the address said.
A congratulatory message from Finance Minister Georgi Klisurski emphasized that, as heirs of the heroes of the April Uprising, Bulgarians bear a direct responsibility to preserve knowledge of this feat of national spirit, which resonated widely internationally and influenced public attitudes at the time.
Natalia Mihalevska also read an address from caretaker Education Minister Sergei Ignatov, highlighting the value of the exhibition in bringing history to life through narratives and testimonies that reach young people, showing that education is not only knowledge of the past but also an understanding of its lessons in dignity, responsibility, and civic engagement.
Prof. Georgi Valchev noted that the commemoration of the anniversary of the April Uprising began somewhat uncoordinated, much like the uprising’s own preparation, “but it ultimately gained significant popularity.”
Prof. Kiril Topalov recalled that the participants in the April Uprising were young people, the intellectuals of Bulgaria at the time, who chose to create something “epoch-making.”
Boni Petrunova said that the National Museum of History is a repository of spirit, a place where we preserve this memory and bring it back to life, adding that the exhibition is a profound tribute to those who gave their blood and lives for Bulgaria’s freedom.
The exhibition “150 Years of the April Uprising: Stories and Narratives of a Heroic Era” presents the events through a comprehensive narrative, combining authentic artifacts – some shown to the public for the first time – with carefully created replicas and reconstructions of lost items, based on historical records, photographs, and documentary evidence.
