Balgarianovinite.com The March for the Family took place in Sofia on Saturday for a sixth consecutive year, drawing participants who expressed support for traditional family values.
The event was organized by the Family Month Association, the Rod [Kin] Association and the Our Home is Bulgaria Foundation, with the support of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, which said it opposes the Sofia Pride, held on the same day.
The march followed a service for All Saints’ Day and a prayer service for the Bulgarian family at St Nedelya Cathedral, officiated by Bulgarian Patriarch Daniil.
Participants gathered at St Nedelya Square before proceeding along central Sofia boulevards to St Alexander Nevsky Square, where a concert dedicated to Family Month featured Bulgarian performers. The procession was accompanied by the National Guards Unit’s brass band.
Marchers carried icons, wooden crosses and Bulgarian flags, while white, pink and blue balloons were distributed among participants. Stalls offering Orthodox Christian literature were set up near the cathedral, and activities for children included a soap-bubble demonstration.
David Alexandrov, one of the organizers and a member of the Family Month Association, said Bulgarian families face challenges linked to the country’s demographic crisis and called for policies to support larger families, including tax and fee relief and incentives for participation in cultural activities.
Alexandrov also said the event has traditionally been held on the same day as Sofia Pride because organizers believe different viewpoints should be represented in public debate. He added that discussions on such issues should be conducted through dialogue.
From a stage outside St Nedelya Cathedral, Alexandrov read a declaration by Progressive Bulgaria expressing support for the Family March. He thanked political parties that have backed what he described as efforts to support the Bulgarian family.
Kristian Shkvarek, chairman of the Conservative Society Foundation and the Family Month Association, said the organizers wanted participants to feel confident expressing conservative views on family and social issues. He argued that some people, particularly among the middle class, are reluctant to publicly express positions that differ from prevailing trends in Europe.
Among those attending the march was Kalina Saxe-Coburg, who wore the colours of the Bulgarian flag and voiced support for the Bulgarian family.
