Balgarianovinite.com Work began Sunday on removing the fence surrounding the illegal buildings in Varna’s Baba Alino area in the presence of Minister of Agriculture and Food Plamen Abrovski and Varna Regional Governor Mario Smarkov.
Abrovski noted that some of the properties are still listed as forest land in the records of the local Forestry Directorate. By law, no one has the right to fence off forest land without permission, the Minister underscored. He specified that both the vinyl panels and the metal structures of the fence will be removed in stages. He noted that the Municipality of Varna is responsible for the concrete foundations.
An order has been issued for the removal of 940 metres of fencing, Abrovski added. He pointed out that the company that fenced off the property did not expect that “someone in this country would finally enforce the law” and therefore had not taken any steps to comply with the order to remove the fence.
The Baba Alino case first came to public attention following investigations by the anti-corruption platform BIRD and reports from local activists, who raised concerns about extensive construction activity on forest land near the Golden Sands resort. The scandal errupted in May, when a joint operation by police and municipal authorities found 104 buildings allegedly constructed – or under construction – without permits, along with unauthorized roads, sewerage systems, and transformer facilities. Twenty-nine workers from Ukraine and Moldova were detained during the raid. The Appellate Prosecutor’s Office in Varna said four criminal case files have been opened and are underway, involving suspected official misconduct, forged documents, false declarations, and illegal logging.
