With a handful of Trump-critical Republicans exiting Washington soon, a new lawmaker is ready to take their place: Sen. John Curtis (R-UT).
The first-term Utah conservative is “stepping into that void” left by Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), and Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and will deliver the “hard truths” Trump will not be happy to hear, according to a Tuesday report from Punchbowl News.
Curtis got the ball rolling last month, when he called out Donald Trump Jr. for having a Russian oligarch linked to Vladimir Putin spend big bucks on his recent wedding.
“A toaster is a wedding gift. A private-island party paid for by a Putin-connected oligarch is something else,” Curtis vented in mid-September.
A few days later, he said the whole thing reeked of “corruption,” and he has called on the Senate Judiciary Committee to subpoena the president’s son. Curtis also told Punchbowl the wedding — which Umar Kremlev reportedly spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on — set off an internal “alarm bell” which made him question the Trump family’s connections.
His remarks echo Tillis’ recent gripes, with the lame duck senator arguing it was “stupid” for Trump Jr. to have Kremlev pay for part of his wedding. At the very least, it was a terrible look for the GOP, Tillis told CNN last week. Curtis now appears ready to walk the Tillis “tightrope,” as 60 Minutes correspondent Ross Douthat put it, where he will criticize the president indirectly by going after his advisers and family members.
The 66-year-old Curtis was first elected to the House in 2017, and he moved over to the Senate following a successful campaign in ’24. He told Punchbowl he’s received a lot of thanks for skewering Trump Jr. and had a lot of people reach out to him. One person who hasn’t: the president.
“It is interesting the White House has not responded,” Curtis said. “I don’t assume for a minute that means they won’t… If I have angered [Trump], it’s actually better to me if he speaks out because it gets it out in the open instead of having it fester there.”
