First Two New Alstom Electric Multiple Units Delivered to Bulgaria, Transport Ministry Says 2026

Balgarianovinite.com The first two new electric multiple units (EMUs) manufactured by Alstom have already been delivered to Bulgaria, the Ministry of Transport and Communications said on Thursday.
After years of underinvestment in rail transport, some of the country’s new trains have now arrived, but a number of challenges remain before they can enter service, Transport and Communications Minister Georgi Peev said during a meeting with Petya Petkova, Alstom’s representative for Bulgaria, and Roberto Saccone, Managing Director for Services in Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova, according to the ministry’s press service.
Peev stressed the need for closer coordination among all institutions involved in the process in order to accelerate the necessary procedures and ensure that the new trains begin carrying passengers safely and on schedule.
By order of the Minister, an expanded working group has been established, bringing together representatives of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Executive Agency Railway Administration, the National Railway Infrastructure Company, and BDZ Passenger Services. The group will monitor the implementation of the contracts for the delivery of the new trains until their completion.
The ministry said that two Alstom electric multiple-unit trains have been delivered to Bulgaria so far.
According to information provided by the company, an audit of the results from the completed tests is expected on June 17. A vehicle-type audit is scheduled for July, after which the certification process will begin. One of the trains is expected to be fully registered by August 31, while the remaining trainsets will be delivered and accepted in stages.
The contractor plans to build and operate two maintenance facilities: a new depot near Svetovrachene, on the outskirts of Sofia, and an existing maintenance base in the Plovdiv area.
The Ministry of Transport and Communications emphasized that the delivery of the new trains under Bulgaria’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan marks the long-awaited modernization of the country’s aging rolling stock.
In March, the first new Skoda electric train for Bulgaria was officially presented at Sofia Central Railway Station. The project for the delivery of 25 electric multiple-unit trains is valued at EUR 326.7 million, of which EUR 261.4 million is financed through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, while the remaining EUR 65.3 million comes from the Transport Connectivity Programme 2021-2027.
