“Repeated attacks on merchant ships in the immediate vicinity of Bulgaria’s territorial waters are completely unacceptable,” Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova wrote on the social network X on Tuesday after Prime Minister Rumen Radev reported new drone attacks on ships in the Black Sea following similar incidents on October 6.
The foreign minister added that the attacks constituted a serious violation of international law and the principles of safe navigation. “Security in the Black Sea is an integral part of Europe’s security. Freedom of navigation and the safety of civilian crews must be a priority,” Petrova said.
The Foreign Minister said she is in constant contact with Bulgaria’s partners in the EU and NATO. “I have already discussed with them the need for assistance in investigating the attacks in order to establish the origin of the drones, as well as support for strengthening surveillance of our airspace and maritime domain and enhancing our response capabilities,” she said.
“This is another dangerous escalation of the war in Ukraine. We must support all diplomatic efforts to bring it to an end,” Petrova added.
Earlier, Prime Minister Radev said he will summon Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova for a meeting. “We do not have solid and clear evidence to bring accusations against any of the parties. However, as I have already stated, the logic of the situation suggests that the outcome benefits the Russian Federation,” the prime minister commented.
