Speaking ahead of an EU defence ministers’ meeting in Brussels on Monday, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said the ministers would discuss rules for cooperation between EU countries in response to hybrid attacks, including procedures for emergency situations.
Kallas said there were indications that Russia was preparing more acts of sabotage against democracy in the EU aimed at dividing European societies and undermining support for Ukraine. She stressed that European intelligence services needed to be prepared to act before such operations were carried out.
She said the EU was also preparing additional proposals in the sanctions lists over the war in Ukraine. Nearly 3,000 individuals and organizations have already been sanctioned, as the EU is planning to expand the list of entities linked to the financing of Russia’s warfare and its defence industry.
Kallas said the defence ministers would also discuss the need to address gaps in European defence capabilities and ways to urgently provide Ukraine with air defence equipment. She stressed the need for EU countries to cooperate more closely.
