Forum Examines EU-Australia Trade and Investment Opportunities for Bulgarian Business 2026

A business forum at Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski on Wednesday examined how Bulgarian companies could benefit from the EU-Australia Free Trade Agreement.
The EU-Australia FTA: What It Means for Bulgarian Business forum focused on opportunities to expand exports, attract investment and develop partnerships in technology, energy, agriculture, education and research. Speakers also discussed sharing expertise and progress towards a bilateral tax agreement.
Australian Ambassador to Greece, Bulgaria and Romania Alison Duncan said the agreement was expected to increase EU exports to Australia by about 30%, add around EUR 4 billion to the EU’s GDP by 2030 and save European businesses around EUR 1 billion annually in tariffs.
Deputy Foreign Minister Hristo Polendakov said Bulgarian exports to Australia had grown by more than 141% over a decade, reaching USD 60 million in 2025, up from USD 25 million in 2015.
Duncan identified opportunities in software, AI, industrial supply chains, defence and energy, alongside Bulgarian wine, rose-based cosmetics and agricultural products. She also presented Australia as a gateway to the Indo-Pacific region and said work on a bilateral tax agreement was in its final stages.
Polendakov pointed to scope for expanding exports of medicines, machinery, medical instruments, essential oils and food products. Renewable energy, clean technologies, sustainable agriculture and research offered further prospects for joint projects, he said.
Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) Chairman Tsvetan Simeonov said sharing expertise was important alongside investment and trade. Bulgarian farmers could learn from Australian producers how to remain competitive, he said. The Chamber would distribute the forum’s presentations through its information channels, including its daily Bulgarian-language bulletin, which reaches more than 12,000 companies.
“We see Sofia University as a meeting place and an important forum for education, research, business and public policy,” Faculty of Economics and Business Administration Dean Atanas Georgiev said.
Georgiev also pointed to cooperation with Western Sydney University, under which professors and guest lecturers from both institutions had exchanged visits.
