Balgarianovinite.com The Frequenza chamber music festival, which has come to Bulgaria for the first time, opened at Sofia’s Bulgaria Hall on Thursday evening with a concert by the Sofia Philharmonic. The festival will run until Sunday, May 10.
The programme brings together reimagined classical masterpieces and contemporary perspectives, from tributes to great composers such as Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, to bold explorations of improvisation and classical-jazz fusion.
The artistic directors of the travelling festival are Sergei Nakariakov, a Russian-born Israeli trumpeter, and Maria Meerovitch, a Russian pianist who has lived and worked in Belgium.
On each of the four days of the Frequenza, the audience will have the opportunity to enjoy a diverse programme presented by leading international musicians.
The Thursday show, held under the baton of Felipe Tristan, began with Ludwig van Beethove’s Triple Concerto for violin, cello, piano and orchestra in C major, Op. 56. The soloists were Barnabas Kelemen, Boris Andrianov and Maria Meerovitch. Later, Sergei Nakariakov performed Variations on a Theme from the Opera Norma by Vincenzo Bellini, Op. 187 by Jean-Baptiste Arban. The programme continued with Pezzo capriccioso for cello and orchestra, Op. 62 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, performed by cellist Jing Zhao.
Also heard at the Bulgaria Hall were Romance for Viola and Orchestra, Op. 85 by Max Bruch with soloist Roman Spitzer, and Fantasy on Themes from the Opera Carmen for violin and orchestra by Georges Bizet and Franz Waxman, performed by violinist Kevin Zhu.
The concert concluded in a jazz style with works by Wayne Shorter and Cole Porter. Infant Eyes and Just One of Those Things were performed by Alex Sipiagin, Misha Tsyganov, Vasil Hadzhigruedev and Stoyan “Stundzhi” Yankulov.
