GERB leader Boyko Borissov Saturday commented on US President Donald Trump’s announcement that Russia had agreed to supply diesel fuel to the US and global markets to help bring prices down. “While other countries are doing everything they can to secure fuel supplies for their own economies, we are allowing fuel to leave the country,“ Borissov wrote on Facebook.
“On September 23, 2026, Rumen Radev’s government, in Rumen Radev’s National Assembly, with the votes of Rumen Radev’s Progressive Bulgaria, lifted the ban on exports of petroleum products from Bulgaria. I publicly warned at the time that lifting the ban on diesel fuel exports was a gross mistake that would bring huge profits to certain traders at the expense of consumers. I said that the interests of a handful of people cannot take precedence over those of Bulgarian farmers, transport operators, businesses and entrepreneurs,” Borissov added.
The State should protect the national interest rather than line the pockets of a handful of people, Borissov added.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to the supplies during a “highly successful” phone call. The Kremlin confirmed the agreement, saying that Russia was ready to supply oil and petroleum products to all markets. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly criticised the agreement, warning that any easing of restrictions on Russian energy exports would help Moscow finance its war against Ukraine.
