GERB will call for Prime Minister Rumen Radev and ministers to be heard in Parliament over the incident involving two ships in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea. Radev has failed to clearly identify those responsible for the attack, GERB-UDF MPs Hristo Gadzhev and Daniel Mitov told a news conference on Tuesday.
“I hope there will be a meeting of the Consultative Council for National Security. If not, we will propose that as early as Wednesday the Prime Minister, the ministers of defence, interior and transport, and the heads of the security services be heard in Parliament, and I hope Progressive Bulgaria will act responsibly,” Gadzhev said.
The MP also said: “We learned from the briefing at the Council of Ministers how the rescue operation was proceeding and what had happened, but we did not learn how the incident occurred or how the attack happened. We also did not hear whose drones these were. I hope this will become clear very soon.” He said that if similar incidents continued, they would affect cargo prices for Bulgaria, insurance costs and retail prices.
Gadzhev recalled that these were not the first incidents or threats in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone, noting that similar incidents had occurred in 2023, 2024 and 2025. He said this was why a mine countermeasures group had been established by Bulgaria, Turkiye and Romania.
“While the President and the Prime Minister are acting like ‘hippies at Woodstock’ and pretend that the war does not concern them, it is escalating,” Gadzhev said.
“The Prime Minister has failed to clearly identify those responsible for this incident,” Daniel Mitov said. According to him, each attack involves decisions, and behind those decisions are specific people. He said the idea of ensuring security through a conciliatory approach towards Moscow was gradually falling apart and described the incident as extremely serious. “It is clear who would attack ships which, according to preliminary information, were carrying Ukrainian grain,” Mitov said.
In his words, the government owes answers on how it would coordinate its efforts with Romania, Turkiye and Bulgaria’s other NATO Allies. Article 4 of the NATO Treaty gives the government the option to do so, he noted.
“Peace is not simply the absence of gunfire when you take a conciliatory approach towards an aggressor,” Mitov said, “The Kremlin always sees governments as ‘soft’ as ours as suitable targets because they [the Kremlin] will pay a lower price for their aggressive behaviour.”
