Balgarianovinite.com GERB-UDF MP Hristo Gadjev, member of the parliamentary defence committee, commenting on Prime Minister Rumen Radev’s announcement that a drone had entered Bulgarian airspace near Kardam and exploded, wrote on Facebook, “Let’s see how Rumen Radev’s government will defend our national interest.”
Gadjev said the origin of the drone was still unclear and speculated about how the government might respond. “If the drone turns out to be Ukrainian, I suspect it will be all over the media by tonight. But if it turns out to be Russian, which is considerably more likely, let’s hope the government doesn’t start making excuses for the incident or playing it down,” the GERB-UDF MP wrote.
“Romania has already responded much more firmly following a series of Russian drones entering its airspace, including by expelling a Russian diplomat,” Gadjev said. “I hope our government won’t go into apology mode towards Russia, as it did with Iran,” he added.
If the drone is Russian, this would constitute another escalation and provocation by the Russian Federation against NATO, and Bulgaria in particular, Hristo Gadjev’s post said.
“Bulgaria’s security is not a subject for partisan propaganda. However, the incident involving a drone that entered Bulgarian airspace and exploded near the village of Kardam requires all the circumstances surrounding the incident to be established quickly and fully,” GERB said in a statement published on Facebook.
According to the party, Bulgarian citizens deserve clear answers about what type of drone was involved, where it came from, what route it followed, and whether the incident was accidental or a deliberate act targeting the territory of a NATO member state.
“It is particularly important to establish whether there is a risk of a repeat incident and what specific measures have been taken to ensure that Bulgaria can promptly detect, track and neutralize similar threats,” the party said.
The incident once again highlights the need for a common European and allied anti-drone defence system along the entire eastern flank, from the Baltic to the Black Sea, with integrated surveillance, information sharing and a coordinated response.
“At a time of heightened risks, Bulgaria must act calmly, professionally and together with its allies. National security requires facts, capabilities and unity, not political speculation,” GERB said.
