Balgarianovinite.com GERB-UDF dismissed as “political propaganda” an inquiry by Democratic Bulgaria (DB) to the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) about an OFAC court filing concerning businessman Vassil Bojkov, former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov. In a Facebook post, GERB-UDF wrote: “Let’s be clear – what has been published is a procedural document, not a court ruling. Attempts to present individual sentences as definitive truth amount to political propaganda, not legal analysis.”
According to information made public in Bulgaria by the investigative website BIRD, “Vassil Bojkov admitted to making payments to former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and former Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov in exchange for favourable treatment of his business. In the document, the conduct described is treated as bribery for the purposes of the applicable sanctions regime.”
In their post GERB-UDF added, “we have always shared this position and have helped to ensure that the objective truth is established. We know the truth, but once again we are witnessing a familiar scenario – a procedural document is used, sentences are taken from it and are then misrepresented in public.”
“We will not allow GERB to be drawn into yet another media campaign based on insinuations rather than facts,” the post said. “It is clear from OFAC’s response that they are defending the US administration’s decision to impose sanctions,” the party added.
DB Co-Chair Ivaylo Mirchev said at a briefing that they are asking OFAC whether there is any new information regarding the case that Vassil Bojkov is pursuing in the US, as there are additional facts related to it. DB sent inquiries to acting Prosecutor General Vanya Stefanova and the State Agency for National Security (SANS), asking whether they would examine the newly published information, restart the case, seek relevant information from US authorities and when they intend to do it, so that Bulgarian society can learn the truth. There are indications that there is new evidence that’s why we sent these letters, Mirchev added.
