Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-WI) revealed, early Sunday, the harrowing escape he and a pilot made after their forced emergency water landing.
In a post to X, the Wisconsin Republican said the plane he was traveling in lost power as it approached the Wausau Downtown Airport. The power loss forced the pilot to make an emergency landing in Lake Wausau.
But although the plane landed safely in the lake, Tiffany revealed that he and the pilot could not stay on board.
“After landing, we called 911,” Tiffany said. “As the plane began to submerge, we exited the aircraft and swam to a shallow area, where we waited until emergency responders reached us by boat.”
But Tiffany said he did indeed reach safety and was taken to a local hospital for what he characterized as minor injuries.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to the pilot, the Wausau Fire Department, and all of the first responders who came to our aid so quickly,” Tiffany said. “They got us safely off the water and transported us to Aspirus Wausau Hospital, where we received excellent care. Thankfully, both the pilot and I sustained only minor injuries.”
He added, “God was watching over us tonight, and I am incredibly grateful to be here in the hospital with my wife, Chris, by my side. An experience like this reminds you just how precious life is.”
According to The New York Times, an FAA official identified the plane as a Beechcraft K35, also known as a Bonanza — which is a single-engine aircraft. The FAA official added that the crash occurred around 8:50 p.m. local time on Saturday.
