Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) baselessly suggested that Dr. Anthony Fauci funded the Russian lab at the center of the pneumonic plague outbreak.
In late September, a researcher was exposed to a pneumonic plague pathogen after accidentally breaking a test tube in a lab located in Russia’s Irkutsk region. The researcher, 28-year-old Daria Shipilova, later died of severe pneumonia. At least 200 others were placed under medical observation.
In a Sunday night tweet, Blake Scholl — the CEO of upstart airliner Boom Supersonic — tried to connect Fauci to the Russian lab leak.
“Don’t tell me Fauci also funded the Irkutsk Institute of Virology,” Scholl said.

On Monday afternoon, Lee added only more fuel to the flame when he laid out a hypothetical scenario that put Fauci at the center of the incident, saying:
I wish we could say with certainty that U.S. government funding wasn’t involved.
I wish we could say with certainty that that the mainstream media wouldn’t cover for Fauci if he provided such funding.
Stranger things have happened.
In recent days, the Trump administration has confirmed it was aware of the situation unfolding in Russian. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the outbreak was “cause for focus” but tried to preemptively quell concerns when he stressed there was “very limited travel between the U.S. and Russia.”
President Donald Trump chimed in on Monday, saying his administration was “looking at it very strongly.” He also said the U.S. would “help as much as we can” despite ongoing tensions related to the war with Ukraine.
