Balgarianovinite.com There was interference with GPS signals, but it did not affect flight safety, Transport and Communications Minister Georgi Peev told bTV on, commenting on information from the State Agency for National Security (SANS) about a powerful GPS jammer located and neutralized in Sofia’s Dragalevtsi neighbourhood.
According to SANS, the device was found in a heavily guarded compound and was interfering with GPS frequencies across Sofia, including at Sofia Airport and for aircraft flying over the capital.
Peev said that safety is paramount in aviation and that any such incident must be assessed from that perspective. He noted that more than 1.2 million aircraft pass through Bulgarian airspace annually.
Aircraft normally use GPS navigation, but when the signal is compromised, as it was in this case, the relevant Bulgarian authorities have procedures in place to respond, Peev said. He added that he was informed of the incident as soon as it occurred. Air traffic controllers report the interference, after which the relevant system is activated and SANS and the Communications Regulation Commission work to locate and neutralize its source, he explained.
The Minister said the jammer had not been operating continuously for years, as there is an indication whenever such a system is active. The GPS disruption occurred while the device was transmitting on Friday, he added.
Peev explained that when GPS signals are jammed, aircraft switch from satellite-based navigation to conventional navigation. Bulgaria has ground-based navigation equipment that allows aircraft to navigate independently of satellites and GPS signals, he said, adding that the country has well-developed air navigation and air traffic management capabilities.
These are not emergency alternatives but established navigation systems maintained by the State, Peev stressed. Both air traffic controllers and aircraft can rely on them, ensuring that flights remain safe when satellite navigation is disrupted.
Asked what the jamming equipment had been used for, Peev said this was a matter for the investigating authorities and that he had no information about the specific type of devices involved. They were powerful and did have an effect on flight navigation, he said, but the procedures triggered in response were standard rather than emergency procedures and operations proceeded normally.
