Balgarianovinite.com Greenpeace activists painted the message “No Gas + Oil” in white paint on the tanker Kairos, which has been anchored in Burgas Bay for more than six months, as a sign of protest against dependence on oil and gas. The environmental organization’s icebreaker, the Arctic Sunrise, also participated in the operation, Greenpeace Bulgaria told BTA.
Activists from Bulgaria, Ukraine, Spain, the United States, and the Philippines joined the protest. The organization added that the operation aims to draw attention to the risks to the Black Sea associated with the transport and use of fossil fuels.
The operation took place three days after the Arctic Sunrise team documented a leak from the Kairos, Greenpeace added. The organization also cited its own satellite analysis from late July, which indicated that dozens of oil slicks were recorded near the tanker between late April and late July. Greenpeace clarified that further investigations are needed to definitively determine the origin of the oil slicks, including chemical analysis of samples and on-site inspections.
The Gambian-flagged oil tanker Kairos, owned by a Chinese company, was towed to an anchorage in Burgas Bay on December 15, 2025, after spending ten days stranded off Ahtopol. The Turkish tugboat Timur Bey, which had been towing the vessel, detached from her in Bulgarian territorial waters and returned south on December 5. At the time, the tanker’s engines and onboard power systems were inoperative, and water had entered her engine room. The Transport and Communications Ministry said after the towing operation that the Kairos posed no safety risk at the designated anchorage and would not impede navigation in the area. Following reports that fuel oil had been detected near Pomorie and Burgas’s Sarafovo borough, a July 24 inspection by the Maritime Administration executive agency found no leaks of fuel, lubricants or oil from the tanker.
According to Greenpeace, the absence of a leak at the time of the inspection does not explain the satellite traces recorded in previous months.
The environmental organization notes that the Kairos is a 274-metre tanker that has been sanctioned by the European Union and the United Kingdom for transporting Russian petroleum products. Environmentalists identify the Kairos as part of Russia’s shadow fleet and are calling for a further investigation into the pollution data and for measures to reduce dependence on oil and gas.
