Balgarianovinite.com Bolhrad is the heart of Bessarabia, the Executive Director of Bulgaria’s Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad Rayna Mandzhukova said in her address to residents of the city on the occasion of the 205th anniversary of its founding.
“Bessarabian Bulgarians do not live only in Bolhrad, but believe me, other Bulgarians are very jealous of you because you receive more attention from Bulgaria,” she said, noting the presence of senior Bulgarian officials, the Bulgarian ambassador, the consul general in Odesa and Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) Director General Kiril Valchev. “All this is evidence of the special relationship Bulgaria has with your city and with you.”
Mandzhukova vowed consistent support from the institution she leads, for the Bessarabian Bulgarian community. As a Bessarabian Bulgarian herself, she said the celebration was also her own. “The holiday of Bolhrad is a holiday for all Bessarabian Bulgarians who went through the difficult years of settling the empty Bessarabian steppes, who, before building their own houses, built churches and schools, who lived through nine state administrations over more than 200 years and did not lose their identity or their language,” she said.
She said the Agency was working to ensure that people in Bulgaria knew more about Bessarabian Bulgarians and their contribution to the country’s history. “We are the connection, but you are the ones who, when you come to Bulgaria, must show your pride that you are not orphans coming from somewhere else, but the same Bulgarians. And you have made the same contribution to our shared history,” Mandzhukova said.
She also expressed concern over the future of the Bulgarian language and identity in Bessarabia, noting that many authorities had sought to suppress the language during the past 200 years, but that it had survived. “Today, the Ukrainian state not only allows you to study the Bulgarian language, but also helps you do so. Bulgaria does as well. And precisely now, we must not relax,” she said, calling for Bulgarian to be passed on within families. “Roots are not there to bind us to the ground; roots are there to draw the energy from which wings grow. I wish all Bessarabian Bulgarians wings to dream and to make their dreams come true.”
On behalf of the Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad, Mandzhukova presented Bolhrad District Council Chairman Mykhailo Sadakliyev with a plaque in recognition of the council’s contribution to preserving Bulgarian national consciousness, culture and identity in the Bolhrad district.
