Violations and unjustified payments exceeding EUR 1 million have been identified at 21 pharmacies in 12 regions in connection with dispensed medicines for which the national medicinal product number did not match the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), the press centre of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) said here on Friday.
The inspections were carried out by the NHIF, the State Agency for National Security, the Interior Ministry’s Economic Police and the Ministry of Health.
In connection with the violations and the sums received without legal grounds, additional technical information for 2025 has been requested from Information Services AD. In coordination with Information Services, the Bulgarian Pharmaceutical Union and the marketing authorisation holders for the medicines concerned, specific measures are being taken to introduce real-time controls to prevent similar cases, the NHIF said.
Inspections across pharmacies began on September 10. At a news briefing, Stoyno Tsvetkov, Deputy Director of the General Directorate National Police, said that high-cost medicines had likely been diverted, causing particularly large losses to the NHIF budget.
According to Tsvetkov, the losses to the Health Insurance Fund amounted to millions of euros. The scheme had been operating since 2025.
