Minister of Health Katya Ivkova told reporters on Tuesday that her Ministry drafted an ordinance, in which a proposal was made to have resident physicians in state-funded residency programmes paid EUR 1,550.
Commenting on the protest scheduled for Tuesday evening, Ivkova said: “I have been in dialogue with the young doctors since the very beginning of my term, and I have even given them my personal cell phone number. I respect their right to protest – after all, we live in a democratic country – and their demands are just and will be met. […] I very much hope, however, that their demands and the energy of these young people will not be exploited for political purposes. My commitment is to their future, not to anyone’s political campaign. Work is underway on the issue of increasing their salaries.”
