Ben Shapiro is now a screenwriter and he’s attracted an impressive cast to Confession, the latest cinematic release from The Daily Wire.
A trailer dropped on Tuesday for the new film and the most surprising part was the reveal that the screenwriter is none other than Shapiro, the conservative pundit and founder of The Daily Wire.
The movie stars James Franco, Rob Lowe, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nick Nolte, Emile Hirsch, Brad Dourif, and Dean Norris. It was directed by Czech director Vaclav Marhoul.
The film’s logline reads:
In Stalin’s 1938 Moscow, a disillusioned former literature professor, Alexei (Lowe), is arrested and brought to the infamous Lubyanka Prison, charged with conspiring with his dissident priest. There, Alexei faces interrogation by his brilliant and brutal former student, Vladimir (Franco). Forced to the ultimate test of betrayal or conscience, and confronted with his past sins, Alexei finds redemption through truth, sacrificing himself to save others in a haunting tale of morality and resistance.
Confession is set to premiere at the Warsaw Film Festival on October 15. It will then open in 100 theaters on November 11, the same day it premieres on The Daily Wire.
Shapiro said about the film:
It was a true honor to be able to work with a cast featuring Oscar, Emmy, and Golden Globe nominees, as well as one of the world’s great directors, to make Confession, an extraordinarily beautiful and honest film deeply rooted in faith, morality, virtue, hardship, and most of all, what it means to be a free and decent human being. I couldn’t be more proud of this project and can’t wait for the audience to see it.
This is Shapiro’s first film as a screenwriter, but he’s been producing movies through Daily Wire fairly consistently for years, the latest being Run Hide Fight: Infidels.
Dallas Sonnier, the producer of Infidels and the upcoming Confession, told Mediaite recently that Daily Wire is upping its film output in the coming months.
Another upcoming film, Pawn Shop, earned backlash from critics and protesters over it being a “pro-ICE movie.”
