History professor and Academician Vassil Nikolov is the winner of the Grand Prize for Science of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) for 2026. This year, the award is given in the field of social sciences and humanities.
The prize was presented by the President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Corresponding Member Evelina Slavcheva, at the solemn meeting for the 157th anniversary of the founding of the Academy.
Academician Ivan Granitski said that Nikolov is a scientist with international renown in the field of late prehistory of the Balkans. He has more than four decades of professional experience as a prehistoric archaeologist, he has passed through the National Archaeological Institute with Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, of which he was also director. He was also the Vice-President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Nikolov has extensive field archaeological experience, which allows him to develop the methodology for studying prehistoric settlements and settlement mounds. He recognizes and studies a new type of prehistoric sites in the Balkans – Neolithic and Chalcolithic sanctuaries. He discovered and studied with his team the earliest prehistoric salt-producing urban center in Europe – the Provadia saltworks, as well as the earliest stone fortresses in Europe associated with its wealth, explained Granitski.
Nikolov thanked his colleagues who nominated him for the award and the members of the committee who awarded it to him.
“It is an honor for me that my scientific contributions and my scientific work in the field of archaeology were so highly appreciated. My entire professional career has been spent at the National Archaeological Institute with Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and I am proud that I have contributed something to the good name of these national scientific institutions. It is an honour for me to receive this award on the day of the celebration of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences – for the 157th anniversary of its establishment, said Academician Nikolov. However, he noted that the great discoveries in history, in archaeology, are not the work of just one person, but are a team effort. This is the basis for good scientific discoveries in antiquity, added the archaeologist.
