As Americans prepare to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, many of the industries most identified with the July 4 holiday are taking advantage of their right to petition the government, guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution.

Fireworks manufacturers, hot dog producers, and makers of apple pies all have trade associations to tout their products to the public and lobby for their industries.

“It’s hard to find an area of U.S. business without a trade association,” said Rogan Kersh, a professor of public policy and global vice chancellor at New York University who has written extensively about lobbying and politics.

“Given the complexity of American national, state, and local government, trade associations’ expert advisors in Washington, D.C., and state capitals/big cities provide essential guidance, helping companies navigate regulatory thickets and tax/budgetary obligations and opportunities” he said. “Those lobbyist-experts also can press the business area’s interests with legislators, executives, and even judges.”

While many industry groups do not register to lobby, it doesn’t mean they stay silent when their issues and concerns come before the federal agencies or members of Congress.

They just don’t meet the thresholds required for them to register as lobbyists. Kersh said.

“Many association representatives can ply their trade legally without registering as a lobbyist,” he said.

And many industries are regulated on a state level, in addition to (or in lieu of) the federal level, like fireworks.

“Fireworks safety regulations vary widely by state from outright bans to strict limits on size and explosive power to anything goes,” Kersh said.

In fact, there are two trade groups representing the industry. The National Fireworks Association spent $15,000 during the first three months of the year lobbying on trade and tariff. The American Pyrotechnics Association did not register to lobby the federal government this year.

Here are some others:

Hot diggity dog. The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council is not registered to lobby, but its parent Meat Institute spent $130,000 from Jan. 1 to March 31 to lobby on nutrition and farm programs as well as food safety. The hot dog council holds an annual hot dog day at the Capitol every July.

Put a little mustard on it. What’s a hot dog without mustard or relish? Kraft Heinz has been active this year, spending $410,000 on lobbying in Q1. There’s an Association for Dressings and Sauces, but it is not registered to lobby.

Wave the flag. There is a trade association representing companies that make American flags in America. The Flag Manufacturers of America is not registered to lobby.

Take me out to the ball game. Major League Baseball spent $310,000 in the first three months of 2026 to lobby on labor issues and the minor leagues. The players’ association spent $40,000 on college sports while also focusing on the minor leagues.

Going away. The July Fourth holiday is one of the busiest times for travel. According to AAA, 72.2 million Americans are expected to go at least 50 miles between Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, July 5, and surpass last year’s domestic travel record of 71.8 million people.

The U.S. Travel Association spent $800,000 to lobby during the first three months of the year, focusing on the World Cup soccer tournament now taking place and the next Olympic games, scheduled for 2028 in Los Angeles.

As for AAA itself, the American Automobile Association spent $30,000 this year to lobby on issues such as traffic safety and highway funding.

Cooling off. The Pool and Hot Tub Alliance spent $20,000 during the first three months of 2026 lobbying on energy efficiency pool equipment.

What’s more American than apple pie? The American Pie Council didn’t spend any money to lobby this year.
