Hunter Biden’s infamous laptop is finding new life in the form of a meme coin meant to troll President Donald Trump and his MAGA adherents.
The son of former President Joe Biden announced via a Wall Street Journal exclusive report, followed by his X account Monday morning, that “$LAPTOP” will debut on Wednesday. The X post included a video montage with everyone from Fox News’s Sean Hannity to Trump himself talking about “Hunter Biden’s laptop.”
“The token’s name is inspired by the sensation that followed the public’s discovery of Biden’s former computer in 2020,” the WSJ reported. ” The contents of that device, from messages that documented his foreign business dealings to nude photos of the president’s son doing drugs, were eventually laid bare. And the leaks forged a cottage industry of investigations, conspiracies—and digital media content.”
Crypto publication The Defiant reported that “At least 14 copycat LAPTOP tokens appeared on four other networks within an hour of the report, trading $6.9 million between them.”
$LAPTOP’s founders, including Biden, “will hold 30% of the one billion tokens issued,” according to the Journal.
Meanwhile, “Another 20% of the supply will be sent, in two batches, to crypto wallets belonging to people who lost money on $TRUMP, the president’s meme coin, subscribers to Hunter Biden’s Substack and a mailing list curated by his friend Andrew Callaghan, a video journalist,” the report said.
Investors in $TRUMP — nearly one million people — lost a total of $3.81 billion when the coin crashed about 36 hours after it launched, largely due to the competing launch of $MELANIA, according to The New York Times. The president, meanwhile, pocketed $600 million from the venture.
Although meme coins have no value of their own, buying sprees are usually spurred on by celebrity involvement or novelty, the report said.
The Journal put it this way: “Meme coins began as a joke—a way for a burgeoning crypto industry to make light of their own willingness to buy anything digital no matter how questionable they appeared. Dogecoin, launched in 2013 as a playful nod to the viral meme featuring a Shiba Inu, is widely considered the first meme coin.”
“Buyers of those coins almost always lose nearly all of their investments,” the report said.
