Balgarianovinite.com Illegal migration pressure on Bulgaria has fallen significantly, Border Police General Directorate Director Anton Zlatanov told a briefing in Burgas, on the Black Sea, on Sunday.
He noted that until three years ago, large groups of irregular migrants were being detained several times a day at various locations across the country, including around Sofia, Plovdiv, and the borders with Serbia and Romania.
“At present, we are keeping migration pressure at extremely low levels. The vast majority of irregular migrants are stopped and blocked at the Bulgarian-Turkish border,” Zlatanov said. He added that Bulgaria’s border with Turkiye remains the busiest migration route in Europe.
According to Zlatanov, more than 1,000 people involved in transporting irregular migrants through Bulgaria have been detained over the past two years alone.
Commenting on the implementation of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, Zlatanov said the changes would not be radical for the Bulgarian authorities, as the country has already been applying high control standards. However, inspection procedures are becoming more intensive under the new framework.
He also said that enhanced controls are currently being carried out in border areas in anticipation of increased migrant traffic during the summer months.
Earlier on Saturday, Zlatanov told BTA that 32 irregular migrants and their driver had been detained at the Poda checkpoint at the entrance to Burgas on Saturday evening.
