‘Insane BS!’ Conservatives and Liberals Alike Baffled by Trump’s Ranking of Presidents 2026

President Donald Trump left liberal critics outraged by declaring himself the greatest president in American history on Thursday and left conservatives trying to decipher his baffling ranking system that relegated former President Ronald Reagan to nowhere at all.

Trump shared the presidential tier list on Truth Social, placing himself alone in a category marked “The Greatest,” above Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Thomas Jefferson, and Andrew Jackson, who were merely deemed “Great.”

The display quickly drew ridicule from liberal commentators over Trump’s decision to put himself at the summit of American presidential history, while conservative voices questioned some of the list’s more peculiar choices and omissions.

Although conservatives in particular began making all kinds of analysis of the rankings, the graphic appears to be a modified version of a LIFE magazine ranking published in 1948 following a survey of 55 American history experts. Trump’s version largely retains those decades-old assessments while inserting more recent presidents, with some conspicuous alterations.

Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and Jimmy Carter appear in the “Failures” category alongside Ulysses S. Grant, and Warren G. Harding. Bill Clinton, meanwhile, pulled some grace and was added to the “Average” tier.

But the list completely omits every president between Franklin D. Roosevelt and Clinton, including Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Reagan, and both George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush.

Reacting, Trump’s opponents fixated on the brazen ego of the post:

Most likely Trump has Grant at the bottom because he relentlessly hunted down and dismantled the original Ku Klux Klan. pic.twitter.com/2XgCzIx2LC

Imagine, just imagine, if any other president – Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Obama, Biden – had posted something like this about themselves. They would be a laughing stock. There’d be no other story in the media. Their own party members would be slamming them.

How/when did we… https://t.co/7wjGgIb6RS

Lot to unpack here but classifying Grant as a failure is so loud pic.twitter.com/fDAKbQURdB

Would love for a reporter to ask Trump to elaborate on his criticisms of John Tyler’s administration https://t.co/cFYWzlIBl0

I get it. People love talking about presidential rankings. But all of the commentary about who was left out, who ranked higher than whom, is a distraction from the fact that the sitting president — during a war, in the lead up to the midterms, during a period of great anxiety —… https://t.co/wEeuwpjq2U

Where are Presidents Reagan and Franklin? pic.twitter.com/mYfLqInB34

Prominent conservatives, meanwhile, were puzzled by the graphic and its glaring omissions:

Woodrow Wilson up top? Coolidge towards the bottom? And no Reagan? Can someone unplug the President, shake him, and plug him back in? https://t.co/Q50UdVZr4J

Not enough people are talking about the fact that *FDR* is in the “great” tier. If you needed a reminder that Trump is not a conservative—and is in fact a big-government Democrat—then here you go! pic.twitter.com/MlJ1SrkU59

If you view this list through the lens of partisanship or a narrow sense of ideology, Trump seems crazy or ill-informed. If you understand this list as a commentary on the meaning of the presidency, it makes more sense than many conservatives are willing to admit. https://t.co/D98a47T0EB

Have to say it's interesting he gives Hoover the "average" rating (he's correct)… and he gives McKinley the average rating too (McKinley was, like, supposed to be his whole thing, but it's also correct)… and he can't help himself… nearly gives Bill Clinton "Near Great"… pic.twitter.com/1vPaKkTo6i

Trump just posted his own presidential ranking, putting himself in the “greatest” category above Lincoln, Washington, FDR, and every other president. pic.twitter.com/ZxcckuQVwL

One thing is for sure: Trump left no ambiguity about where he believes he belongs.
