Balgarianovinite.com Large amounts of waste have been stored in breach of requirements at Sofia Municipality’s waste treatment plant, a follow-up inspection by the Sofia Regional Environment and Water Inspectorate (REWI) has found.
During an August 14 inspection, the inspectorate again found violations of the plant’s integrated permit conditions, including the outdoor storage of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) outside designated areas. The practice had already been flagged in previous inspections, but has continued despite orders to correct it, REWI-Sofia said.
The inspectorate also found that the plant had again failed to provide real-time remote access to its video surveillance system at the Sadinata site, despite previous orders to do so. REWI-Sofia has taken enforcement action and issued new orders to correct the violations. The inspection is part of increased oversight of the facility, the inspectorate said.
In 2025 alone, REWI-Sofia carried out 10 inspections of Sofia Municipality’s integrated waste treatment system and issued 12 administrative violation reports, resulting in fines totalling EUR 78,738.
