Balgarianovinite.com In a Facebook post on Monday, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said that “the State has often underestimated the scale of the digital manipulation of our children, but this period of institutional neglect is coming to an end.”
“The brutal murder in Plovdiv and the shameful humiliation of a child in Radomir are not simply crime stories. They are the ultimate, bloody diagnosis of the state of our society. This is not a warning light, but a fire consuming the moral code of the next generation. Our society is no longer merely at risk — it has become its victim,” the Minister wrote. “When violence and death become content for social media, we are no longer talking about crime, but about complete pathology,” Demerdzhiev added. He referred to the recent murder of a 37-year-old man in Plovdiv, in which the teenagers involved livestreamed footage of the assault on social media. The Minister also cited a case involving footage circulated online showing a child assaulting and verbally abusing a younger child in Radomir.
“Over the past 20 years, our children have witnessed systemic impunity, in which the law was seen as an annoying detail and aggression as the shortest path to success. I know this is a painful subject, but it is time for brutal honesty. The State cannot replace the family, nor can it compensate for a parent’s absence in the process of raising their child,” Demerdzhiev said.
The Minister also wrote that over the past month he had held a series of meetings with cybersecurity experts and social media analysts monitoring online radicalization. “State control will be imposed everywhere — without exceptions and without compromise. I also discussed this issue with Prime Minister Rumen Radev, and we will do everything in our power to turn these measures into law,” Demerdzhiev added.
Earlier in the day, the Minister said that the Interior Ministry’s Cybercrime Directorate was monitoring every form of aggression on social media and that people with profiles similar to those of the teenagers in Plovdiv had been apprehended.
