Balgarianovinite.com During a meeting between Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) Executive Director, Hans Leijtens, Demerdzhiev said that the security of Bulgaria’s borders and the measures Bulgaria is implementing could serve as a model for the entire European Union. The two agreed that Frontex should support Member States even more actively in the fight against illegal migration and new security threats, the Interior Ministry press service reported on Tuesday.
Demerdzhiev stated that it is essential to achieve a uniform standard of security at the external borders that works for the benefit of the EU. He added that the entire community must be prepared to respond to new security challenges, including countering threats arising from the incursion of unmanned aerial vehicles.
The Minister said that for Bulgaria, the partnership with Frontex is of key importance. He added: “As a country situated on a key external border of the European Union, we are protecting not only our national border but also the security of the entire Schengen Area.” Demerdzhiev said that the Agency’s development must be guided by the real needs of Member States and the specific risks at the external borders.
The operational partnership with Frontex was highly commended, the Interior Ministry stated. As part of the joint operation Bulgaria 2026, 160 Frontex officers have been deployed along Bulgaria’s external borders.
Earlier Tuesday, Demerdzhiev and his Polish counterpart, Marcin Kierwinski, agreed on the need for closer cooperation and stronger direct professional contacts in addressing common security challenges, including effective protection of the EU’s external borders.
