Balgarianovinite.com Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev removed the Director of the Blagoevgrad Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior, Iliyan Tuparov, over actions by Directorate officers in Strumyani, the Ministry said on Friday.
Tuparov was removed from the post by an order of the Interior Minister. He had been temporarily appointed to the position by an order of former caretaker interior minister Emil Dechev.
“The Director did not report the case in a timely manner, while the response of the officers on the ground exceeded what was necessary,” Interior Minister Demerdzhiev said, quoted in the press release. “Guaranteeing the rights and freedoms of Bulgarian citizens is a key priority for the Ministry of Interior,” Demerdzhiev added.
Earlier in the day, a local activist was arrested in handcuffs during a government delegation’s visit to the flood-hit village of Strumyani on Friday, prompting demands for an explanation from the Interior Ministry by Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev and the Association of European Journalists – Bulgaria (AEJ-Bulgaria). The delegation was headed by Prime Minister Rumen Radev and also included the Ministers of Environment and of Agriculture.
Following inquiries by the press, the Blagoevgrad Directorate of the Interior said that the police acted on a request by the National Service for Protection (NSP) for assistance in identifying a person who repeatedly attempted to breach the security zone in the immediate vicinity of a protected person. According to NSP, the woman tried to enter a designated press area but failed to show an ID or a press card. The woman was coercively taken to the nearest police department for verification of her identity. A warning statement was issued for violation of public order because she did not have an ID on her, which is a requirement under the Bulgarian Identity Documents Act, after which the woman was released.
The Council of Ministers said in a press release that Prime Minister Radev himself ordered a check into the arrest. The incident did not take place in Radev’s presence, the press release also said.
