Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev does not have enhanced security over the personal threats against him, he said in a televised interview on Sunday. He told bTV that he is not concerned about the threats.
Earlier in the day, Bulgarian Cyber Police head Vladimir Dimitrov told Nova TV that threats had been made against Interior Minister Demerdzhiev in the latest wave of bomb threat emails sent to hundreds of Bulgarian institutions.
Demerdzhiev said further: “We are guided by objective information, which we verify for each and every case, including the one concerning me. It is more important to strictly follow protocol in the event of such bomb threats and for people not to succumb to attempts to create destabilization or instill fear.” The leadership of various ministries and agencies has also been briefed, he added.
Demerdzhiev recalled that a similar series of threats involving explosive devices had occurred during the last elections, as well as before that. “We are noticing an extremely troubling pattern. For example, on July 2, I spoke in the National Assembly about [Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader Delyan] Peevski’s flights. On July 7-8, additional information emerged, and a series of bomb threats began,” the Interior Minister commented. “During my hearing [in Parliament] last week, there was even a personal threat intended to prevent my car from reaching the National Assembly on time,” Demerzhiev added. “This correlation worries me. We will do everything possible to identify who is behind these threats, although technically this is very difficult,” he noted.
