Balgarianovinite.com Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev has submitted to the National Assembly a report on an operational inquiry concerning Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) leader Delyan Peevski, who is sanctioned for corruption under the US Global Magnitsky Act. The report contains records from an international system presenting flight reservation and travel data from the beginning of 2023 to June 2026, the Interior Ministry said on Friday.
MP Hamid Hamid said the report shows that Interior Minister Demerdzhiev had lied to the National Assembly on July 2. According to Hamid, the report is about operational-search actions against a person with immunity (Peevski), and these actions violated the Criminal Procedure Code and the Constitution. Hamid argued that the period covered by the report is “much shorter” than suggested earlier, and the information about the number of flights and the people involved is confusing.
Progressive Bulgaria MP Yavor Gechev rejected Hamid’s claim by saying that the information presented by Demerdzhiev came from official Interior Ministry records and there is no reason to believe the ministry provided false information.
Meanwhile, the Sofia City Prosecution Office (SCPO) ordered preliminary checks into allegations concerning the use of Passenger Name Record (PNR) data. The use of PNR data came into the public eye after the Interior Minister’s July 2 disclosures to the National Assembly about Peevski’s international travel. The checks ordered by the SCPO will be carried out by the General Directorate National Police.
On July 5, Demerdzhiev said authorities were examining the source of the funds used to pay for Peevski’s flights and whether the prices paid reflected market rates. A day later, the MRF parliamentary group referred what it described as an unprecedented leak and large-scale misuse of personal data involving EU and third-country nationals to Europol and Interpol in what it called the “PNR-gate” case.
In 2021, Peevski was designated by the United States under the Global Magnitsky Act for corruption and influence peddling. The US authorities described him as an oligarch who had “regularly engaged in corruption”, including through influence peddling and bribes to shield himself from public scrutiny and exert control over key institutions and sectors in Bulgaria. Peevski is challenging the designation in a US court, with his lawyers arguing that there is no evidence of wrongdoing by their client. In 2023, the United Kingdom also sanctioned Peevski over alleged attempts to exert control over key institutions and sectors through bribery and the use of his media empire.
