Interior Ministry Secretary General Lyubomir Nikolov told journalists on Tuesday that a rescue operation was carried out in very rough seas near the coastal town of Byala after authorities received a report of a ship in distress in the Black Sea.
He noted that, as a result of the immediate action taken by Bulgarian authorities, Border Police officers arrived at the scene, located the vessel, which was most likely struck by three drones, and rescued 15 sailors: eight Azerbaijani and seven Ukrainian nationals. The sailors are currently receiving treatment at St Anna Hospital and the Naval Hospital in Varna.
Nikolov added that another distress call was received overnight, reporting of a ship’s crew in distress approximately 18 nautical miles off Krapets. He clarified that it was not yet possible to establish whether the vessel had sunk, but no signals were being received from it.
Nearby commercial vessels provided assistance, rescuing five sailors from Syria and Egypt, who were also transported to Varna. The number of people on board the vessel and the type of cargo it was carrying remain unknown.
Asked about measures to address the increasing number of incidents in the Black Sea, Nikolov said the necessary steps had already been identified and discussions with Bulgaria’s partners were already under way. The aim is to equip Bulgaria’s Black Sea border with anti-drone systems capable of detecting unmanned aerial vehicles in good time, he added.
