Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev told journalists that the Interior Ministry is currently engaged in organizing the elections. “We have considerable experience in this area,” Demerdzhiev said. He was speaking before opening the 12th European Police Men’s Volleyball Championship on Monday. Bulgaria is hosting the competition.
“We have assigned specific tasks; there was a national coordination meeting. Tomorrow, there will be a coordination meeting involving all the institutions responsible, so we are actively working on this,” he said, adding that every territorial structure of the Interior Ministry has been tasked with taking measures against vote-buying.
Commenting on information he had previously disclosed about companies involved in the supply of road guardrails allegedly diverting funds to a “cash-box company”, which in turn paid for flights taken by Movement for Rights and Freedoms Chair Delyan Peevski, Demerdzhiev said that pre-trial proceedings were under way to determine whether the guardrails had the necessary certificates and had undergone the required tests.
“We are waiting for the results, but we have grounds to question whether this was done in accordance with the procedure prescribed by law and whether the guardrails installed on our roads meet all the relevant requirements,” he said.
“We have submitted the materials to the prosecution service. I hope it will handle this investigation with the same speed with which it acted on Delyan Peevski’s complaint that data concerning his flights had been obtained unlawfully,” the Minister added.
“I hope the standard will be the same, I hope the speed will be the same, and if that is the case, we will have answers very soon,” he said.
Asked whether a connection with Boyko Borissov had been established at this point, Demerdzhiev said that “the name of Vladislav Goranov can be seen there”.
“There are four companies that have consistently won more than 96% of the contracts for road guardrails, and there was another contract that they had won and were about to receive,” he said.
“I am glad that under the current administration this contract was cancelled, because these corrupt practices need to be addressed, and that is one of the major objectives before us,” Demerdzhiev added.
“I think the name of Vladislav Goranov is sufficiently closely associated with Borissov,” he said.
“We know how this party is structured, we know how it is run. It was effectively run by one person throughout those years, and I do not believe that Vladislav Goranov or any other party official could have acted at such a level without Borissov’s authorization and approval,” Demerdzhiev said.
Regarding the State Agency for National Security and Plovdiv Regional Directorate of the Interior Ministry operation targeting a group that allegedly practiced unconventional rituals involving psychoactive substances, Demerdzhiev said that details could not be disclosed at this stage.
“But there are such groups operating in the country and engaging in similar activities. Our task is to identify them and neutralize them at an early stage, before anything more serious occurs,” Demerdzhiev said.
