Investigator Boyko Atanasov Puts Forward His Candidacy for Election to Supreme Judicial Council 2026

Investigator Boyko Atanasov of the Sofia City Prosecution Office Investigation Department has put forward his candidacy for election as a member of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) from the investigators’ quota, the SJC said.
Atanasov said his work to date as an independent magistrate morally obliged him to take part in the election procedure, the SJC said. He also said he met the statutory criteria, having repeatedly demonstrated high professional and ethical qualities. He expressed readiness to use his professional and life experience to contribute to improving the judiciary, safeguarding its independence and raising the ethical standards of the SJC.
Atanasov served as an investigator at the Sofia Investigation Service between 2002 and 2009. Following its restructuring, he has continued to serve as an investigator in the Sofia City Prosecution Office Investigation Department, the SJC said.
BTA is covering the election of SJC members from the parliamentary, judges’, prosecutors’ and investigators’ quotas under New Supreme Judicial Council rubric.
The amendments to the Judicial System Act adopted by the National Assembly on June 26 set out the procedure for electing the new SJC.
The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) consists of 25 members: 22 elective and three ex officio (the presidents of the two supreme courts and the prosecutor general).
The professional quota represents the three magistrate communities (judges, prosecutors, and investigating magistrates) in the SJC’s two chambers: Judges Chamber and Prosecutors Chamber. The professional quota consists of six members of the Judges Chamber and five members of the Prosecutors Chamber, of whom four are elected by prosecutors and one by investigating magistrates.
The parliamentary quota – six SJC members of the Judges Chamber and five of the Prosecutors Chamber – will be elected by the National Assembly.
