Balgarianovinite.com Iraqi News Agency (INA) Director General Sattar Jiyad Al-Ardawi visited the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) National Press Club in Veliko Tarnovo and toured the historic Tsarevets Fortress on Wednesday.
He was introduced to the activities of the press club, which opened in 2003, and the work of BTA news correspondents covering the municipalities of Veliko Tarnovo Region. The guest received a DVD featuring a documentary about Bulgaria’s medieval capital.
Accompanied by a guide from the Regional Museum of History, Al-Ardawi toured Tsarevets Fortress. He expressed particular interest in the fact that Veliko Tarnovo served as the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire (12th-14th centuries), one of the most important cultural and political centres of the Middle Ages. He was also impressed by the pyramid-shaped monument at Tsarevets commemorating the proclamation of Bulgaria’s Independence in 1908. The guest also visited Journalists’ Square, inaugurated in May on the initiative of the Veliko Tarnovo branch of the Union of Bulgarian Journalists.
During his visit to Bulgaria, Al-Ardawi and BTA Director General Kiril Valchev signed a partnership agreement at BTA’s National Press Club in Sofia.
Valchev noted that BTA’s archives already contain two agreements with INA – one signed in 1976 and another in 1982. The newly signed agreement provides for the regular exchange of news through full mutual access to the content of both agencies. It also envisages additional cooperation through the exchange of newsworthy information between the editors of the two agencies, as well as journalist exchange programmes between Bulgaria and Iraq.
INA officially publishes news in English, and we aim to expand our reach by adding French, Spanish and Persian, Al-Ardawi said. He noted that the agency serves around 25 million readers in Iraq, which has a population of approximately 40-45 million people.
He also expressed satisfaction with the strong level of economic cooperation between Bulgaria and Iraq in recent years, saying it provides a solid foundation for broader bilateral cooperation. INA has correspondents in neighbouring Arab countries and will establish a direct news exchange channel with Bulgaria. “We look forward to coordinating the exchange of news materials. I have greatly enjoyed my visit and hope to welcome you as our guest in Iraq. Let us strengthen our relations even further,” the INA Director General said.
Al-Ardawi was also among the official guests at the Dr Emil Iliev International Jazz Festival in Borovets, where BTA received awards for promoting and covering the music event. The Bulgarian News Agency has been a media partner of the festival since its first edition at the mountain resort in 2022. During his stay, Al-Ardawi also visited BTA’s National Press Club in Samokov and explored local landmarks in the region.
