Irrigation will be a key government priority in the 2027 budget, Agriculture and Food Minister Plamen Abrovski said here on Friday. He was speaking at a discussion forum on “The Future of Bulgarian Agriculture: Policies, Competitiveness and Sustainability,” held as part of the Gifts of Thrace agricultural exhibition in Plovdiv.
He noted that a total of 35 projects to modernize irrigation infrastructure have been approved, potentially expanding irrigated farmland by 40,000 hectares.
The Agriculture and Food Ministry will publish the indicative payment schedule for the 2026 farming campaign by the end of October, with payments to begin on October 20 and 30% advance payments under coupled support expected by the end of the month. By year-end, the State Fund Agriculture is expected to disburse funds under more than 40 support schemes.
The Ministry is also preparing a new law on agricultural cooperation to encourage voluntary partnerships and strengthen farmers’ bargaining power.
