Texas candidate for U.S. Senate James Talarico (D) was forced to address MAGA rumors that he had some kind of mental breakdown instead of just the flu that led to his absence from the campaign trail for more than a week.
NBC 5 in Dallas-Fort Worth reporter Phil Prazan caught up with Talarico on Sunday and asked, “I believe your campaign said you had the flu. What happened?”
“Yeah, I got the flu and I’m feeling much better and I’m glad I had a chance to recover,” Talarico said. “You know, if you don’t take the opportunity to get well, sometimes you can get even sicker, and so I’m glad we made the decision to just take the week go get better, and now, I’m glad to be back on the trail.”
“You’ve talked about how you’re diabetic and that…when diabetics get the flu, it could get really bad. How bad was it, for somebody who wants to know? Is this just like bed rest, or did you ever have to go to a doctor or hospital?” Prazan asked.
“I just went to my primary care physician, but it wasn’t anything worse than a, you know, nasty case of the flu,” Talarico laughed.
“And so, I was in bed and, you know, drinking like lots of liquids. Unfortunately the campaign made me work from home, so I didn’t even get full days off, but, you know, I didn’t want to be out on the trail and didn’t want to get anyone else sick. It’s important, I think for leaders to be responsible in these moments, and I’m glad to be back. Feeling much better.”
Prazan then presented Talarico with how “the internet was invested” in his outcome.
“I’m sure it’s cause they care so much about me,” Talarico joked.
“Conservative folks on Twitter and some of [Ken] Paxton’s Allies were pushing the idea that you had a stress induced episode and were getting treatment for it. What are your thoughts? Did that happen?” Prazan asked.
That’s not true,” Talarico repeated. “I just had the flu and I feel much better . But it’s a good reminder that you can’t believe everything you read on the internet.”
Prazan asked about the controversy surrounding Paxton’s avoidance of the debate stage.
“President Trump said that you and Attorney General Ken Paxton should debate ,” Prazan said. “He says that Paxton is ready, willing, and able to debate,” Prazer said.
“I agree with President Trump, I think Ken Paxton should debate,” Talarico said. “The president is saying he should debate, Fox News has said he should debate, the people of Texas have said he should debate, and I think it’s mysterious that Ken Paxton Hasn’t responded to a request for a debate in 85 days.”
“I I hear that people are getting really concerned about the Attorney General and, you know, I’ve heard rumors that he has a rare medical condition that causes clinical levels of cowardice,” Talarico quipped. “So, I know Ken Paxton has asked for proof of life for me. I’m asking for proof of spine from him .”
