Jimmy Fallon Mocks Trump’s Claim He’s ‘SMART’ Enough to Keep AI Under Control: ‘Well, I Feel Better’ 2026

Jimmy Fallon mocked President Donald Trump Monday night after the president suggested the U.S. doesn’t need new “guardrails” on artificial intelligence because his own intelligence is enough to keep the technology in check.

The president’s message and Fallon’s jab came days after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for greater independent scrutiny on frontier AI development, arguing that the technology is advancing faster than safeguards can keep pace.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI founder Elon Musk both publicly backed elements of his call. The call came after a former Anthropic researcher quit and warned that AI could wipe out humanity in the coming decades.

Trump weighed in on the warnings by industry leaders as exaggerated with a characteristically bullish post on Monday, declaring: “The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!”

“Well, I feel better,” Fallon deadpanned as he opened The Tonight Show hours later.

The NBC host then imagined the president attempting to prove himself against the technology using one of his favored boasts about cognitive tests: “Trump was like, ‘[imitating Trump] I’d like to see ChatGPT pick out a zebra on the cognitive test. I mean, I don’t think – I don’t think so, buddy.’”

Fallon continued: “We’re relying on Trump to beat AI, I don’t even think Trump can beat Wordle.”

“Trump’s handling it, which means he’s gonna change the name from ‘Artificial Intelligence’ to ‘American Intelligence,’” the host added, riffing on Trump’s rebranding of the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario.

He followed with another jab: “Keep in mind, up until a week ago, Trump thought AI stood for American Idol, so, [imitating Trump] ‘I’ve spoken with Ryan Seacrest, and we’re perfectly safe.’”

Trump also said he was “not downplaying the risks” posed by AI but predicted the technology would ultimately prove to be “more good than bad by a lot.”

That assessment gave Fallon another opening to rip the president’s meme-posting: “For some reason, Trump’s not eager to stop something that lets him make photos of himself as Jesus riding a bald eagle.”

“Yep, Trump said that concerns about AI have been exaggerated by ‘very negative forces,’” the host said. “And then he announced plans to fight those forces with a new military branch called the Very Negative Force Force.”
