Jimmy Kimmel mocked President Donald Trump for awarding Elon Musk the nation’s highest science honor, accusing the billionaire former DOGE chief of having “bulldozed” federal health research before being welcomed back into the president’s embrace.
Trump presented Musk with the National Medal of Science on Thursday during a Washington ceremony that also honored Google co-founder Sergey Brin, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Microsoft SEO Satya Nadella, and AMD CEO Lisa Su.
The White House described the recipients as among America’s leading innovators.
On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, however, the late-night host framed the ceremony as a consolation act ahead of Friday’s Nobel Peace Prize announcement, which Trump has repeatedly said he deserves while publicly casting doubt on his chances of winning.
“There will be no-bell for Yell-son Mandela this year, so he’s come up with his own ceremony to distract from that,” Kimmel said. “In Washington today, Trump awarded the National Medal of Science to his owner, Elon Musk.”
After showing footage of the pair at the presentation, Kimmel added of Musk: “Look at the body language here. This is definitely someone we can trust with the keys to our military in space, nodding. And it’s like he’s rebooting in front of our eyes.”
Kimmel then turned to Musk’s record leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which spearheaded sweeping cuts across the federal government early in Trump’s second term: “And of course, it makes sense that Elon Musk would get our nation’s medal of science. No one has meddled more with our nation scientists than Twitchy Cybertruck, the person who bulldozed the National Institute of Health and convinced Congress to cut $200 million of pediatric cancer research.”
Trump administration changes at the NIH have drawn sustained criticism from scientists and lawmakers over canceled grants and disrupted medical research, including pediatric cancer programs, although the administration has defended its restructuring as an effort to eliminate waste and redirect scientific investment.
The host also revisited Musk’s spectacular public rupture with Trump last year: “And only 16 months after tweeting, ‘Time to drop the really big bomb, @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the reason they’ve not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT.’ 16 months later, they’re side by side, exchanging medals.”
Musk later deleted the tweet and apologized.
Kimmel said. “I guess it’s all water under the bridge they call home. It is so nice when two terrible people can put their differences aside for the greater bad.”
