Balgarianovinite.com The General Assembly of the judges of the Supreme Administrative Court elected Judge Mariana Shoteva as a member of the Commission for Counteracting Corruption, the court’s press office announced on Monday.
The selection committee heard Mariana Shoteva, a judge at the Plovdiv Administrative Court, before the voting procedure. In a secret ballot vote, of the 70 judges who attended the General Assembly, 44 were in favour of Shoteva, 13 voted against, and 13 ballots were declared invalid.
Judge Shoteva has more than 25 years of legal experience within the judiciary and extensive professional expertise in administrative and criminal law. From 2014 to 2022, she served as chair of the Pazardzhik Administrative Court, and since 2022 she chairs the Plovdiv Administrative Court, according to the press release.
In her vision for the role, Shoteva places particular emphasis on strengthening the institutional capacity of the Commission for Countering Corruption, safeguarding its independence and professionalism, and ensuring the consistent application of the law and the principles of the rule of law.
At the end of May, the National Assembly adopted legislative amendments expanding the Commission for Counteracting Corruption to five members. Under the new rules, one member is elected by parliament, one is appointed by the president, one is elected by the General Assembly of the judges of the Supreme Court of Cassation, one by the General Assembly of the judges of the Supreme Administrative Court, and one by the Supreme Bar Council. The commission will also have investigative powers.
President Iliana Iotova nominated Pavel Todorov Gaydarov for member of the commission. The Supreme Bar Council elected Milen Shopov, a lawyer with the Sofia Bar Association, as its representative.
