Justice Minister Nikolay Naydenov said in an interview on Nova TV on Sunday that the Petrohan-Okolchitsa murders case is one of the major crimes not only of the year, but perhaps of the entire decade. “It is therefore right for us to ask, now that we have received some answer as to who the perpetrator was, who was behind the organization, who financed it, and whether other crimes may also be connected to this one. So, in my view, the answers are still to come,” Naydenov said.
“We have been presented with information about an extremely serious crime involving both offenses related to child sexual abuse and charges connected with murder, the most serious crime, involving the taking of a human life,” he said. According to Naydenov, the criminal proceedings will most likely be terminated because the perpetrator is no longer alive.
Commenting on the prosecution service’s press conference on the case last week, Naydenov said that for a long time, and not without reason, the prosecution had been criticized for operating behind closed doors and failing to provide information about the progress of pre-trial investigations.
“This time it did provide that information. Perhaps it did not do so in the most appropriate way, but I would not criticize it for that, given the seriousness of the information that was presented,” he added.
Regarding the leaked and published forensic reports from the case, which contained the personal data of children, the Justice Minister said that there are institutions whose mandate includes overseeing the unauthorized disclosure of such personal data. If violations have occurred, he said, those institutions should establish the facts and impose the appropriate sanctions.
Naydenov also commented on the case involving the pardon of a person convicted of drug trafficking, describing it as an “artificial scandal” and linking it to the election campaign. He said that, based on the assessment provided by a specially appointed medical commission, it was clear that, at least according to the documents, the person’s medical condition was extremely serious.
“Whether the documents that were submitted and on the basis of which the decision was made accurately reflect the actual situation is another question,” Naydenov added.
“If the medical assessment contains false information, that would constitute grounds for seeking criminal liability from the people who signed it,” the Justice Minister said. He added that the matter would be investigated because “this is a scandal that has only recently erupted”.
The medical assessment was carried out in 2022 and was commissioned by the Minister who was in office at the time, Naydenov added.
“A pre-trial investigation into a potential crime is initiated when there is sufficient information and a legal basis for doing so. I believe those conditions have been met,” the Justice Minister said.
“I will, of course, submit all the information held by the Justice Ministry. In fact, it is already with Parliament, I was asked to provide it, and I have done so,” he added.
