Balgarianovinite.com Caretaker Justice Minister Andrey Yankulov has ordered an inspection into the employment status of the Deputy Head of the Ministry’s General Directorate Security, Deyan Dimitrov, amid concerns raised by a journalistic investigation into a 2024 road accident involving him. Speaking at a briefing in the Council of Ministers, Yankulov said the Ministry “had taken steps to clarify the circumstances surrounding a senior official within the justice system’s security structure”. The probe follows media reports into a traffic accident in Sofia in which an 83-year-old lawyer, Stefan Dimitrov, was struck on a pedestrian crossing and later died from his injuries.
The driver involved in the case was identified as Deyan Dimitrov, then a security officer assigned to acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov. The crash was under investigation for a period of one and a half years before being closed with no charges pressed against Dimitrov. It was closed right after the prosecutor in charge was changed. According to the journalistic investigation in the Off the Air [izvanefir.bg] platform for independent journalism, Dimitrov is also alleged to have links to the circle around Petyo “the Euro” Petrov, a notorious trader in influence in the judiciary and now a fugitive from justice.
Yankulov said the Justice Ministry has also requested information from the prosecutor’s office regarding procedural steps taken during the investigation, including how the case was handled and subsequently concluded. He added that information has been sought about the reassignment of the case between supervising prosecutors.
The minister said the journalistic material raises serious questions about the conduct of the prosecution service and alleged irregularities in the handling of the investigation into the fatal crash. He noted concerns that the case may have involved a former security officer linked to the Prosecutor General, adding that this further deepens doubts about how the proceedings were conducted and closed.
Yankulov described the developments highlighted in the reports as “deeply troubling,” stressing that the ministry is seeking full clarification of the circumstances surrounding both the investigation and the administrative decisions linked to it.
