Balgarianovinite.com Karlovo Municipality signed a sister city agreement with the Japanese Municipality of Ina, Saitama Prefecture, on May 9, the Bulgarian municipality reported. The document was signed via correspondence letter by Karlovo Mayor Emil Kabaivanov and in person during the ceremony by Ina Mayor Kiyoshi Oshima, Saitama Prefecture Governor Motohiro Ono, and Bulgarian Ambassador to Japan Marieta Arabadjieva.
Special guests at the event included members of Parliament, municipal councillors, mayors of other cities in the prefecture, and residents of Ina. The ceremony was also attended by Prof. Hiro Takahashi, a visiting lecturer at St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia, and Dr. Maria Yotova, a lecturer at Ritsumeikan University in Japan, who helped establish contacts between Karlovo and Ina.
The ceremony took place during the Rose Festival in Ina’s rose garden, which covers an area of 14,000 sq. m. and features 5,000 rose bushes of 400 varieties. After signing the agreement, Ambassador Arabadjieva, Governor Ono, and Mayor Oshima planted the Bulgarian damask rose donated by the Embassy and the new rose variety of Ina, named “Kagayaki.”
In his opening remarks to the guests, Mayor Oshima noted that the rose is a symbol shared by both towns, which served as an incentive for signing the agreement. The citizens also heard a greeting from Mayor Kabaivanov, who extended an invitation to his counterpart to come visit at the end of May this year on the occasion of the Rose Festival.
Ambassador Arabadjieva highlighted the important role of sister cities in strengthening bilateral relations and expressed her hope that the ties between Karlovo and Ina would be further explored and deepened in the areas of culture, business, and academic exchange.
To conclude the event, Ina Municipality residents had the opportunity to experience Bulgarian culture and folklore and sample Bulgarian food and beverages. On stage, the KOGA dance group performed traditional dances from various regions of Bulgaria.
