Balgarianovinite.com The spirit of Bulgarian modernism can still be found in Kazanlak – a city that preserves the memory of artists such as Pencho Slaveykov, Chudomir, and Ivan Milev, said Kazanlak Mayor Galina Stoyanova during a discussion at the BTA National Press Club in Kazanlak, part of the Bulgarian News Agency initiative “Pencho Slaveykov Today,” dedicated to the 160th anniversary of the birth of the Tryavna-born poet and Bulgarian modernism.
The BTA initiative continues at the agency’s National Press Club in Kazanlak, exactly on the fourth anniversary of its renovated reopening and during the Rose Festival.
According to Stoyanova, Pencho Slaveykov remains one of the most significant figures in Bulgarian culture, whose ideas continue to provoke reflection today. She noted that the topic of his work often causes concern among high school graduates. This confirms the fact that the misunderstood poet Pencho Slaveykov continues to be misunderstood in Bulgaria.
According to her, Slaveykov’s fate is an example of the attitude toward individuals who are ahead of their time.
“Not only the life and work of Pencho Slaveykov show how many Bulgarians remain unrecognized, unacknowledged, and misunderstood by our state. Especially if they have set out in search of something modern, if they have looked beyond the present day, or have predicted developments that are difficult to imagine within a foreseeable timeframe,” said Galina Stoyanova.
In her speech, she also touched on the topic of young people’s education abroad. Stoyanova recalled that Pencho Slaveykov completed his education in Leipzig, and that many people from Kazanlak have sought knowledge and experience outside the country over the years.
“And nowadays we are doing the same as parents, we send our children to Europe. But the big difference is that we do not bring them back to Bulgaria,” she said.
According to the mayor, Kazanlak combines tradition and modernity in its cultural life. She noted that the Rose Festival was created as recognition of the work of rose growers and traders, but at the same time it provides opportunities for contemporary artists from Bulgaria and abroad.
She also emphasized the role of the contemporary creative community in Kazanlak, including local artists, poets, and cultural figures, who, in her view, continue the pursuit of spirituality and creative development embodied by figures such as Pencho Slaveykov.
