Konstantin Papazov was elected president of the Bulgarian Basketball Federation at the federation’s general assembly in Sofia on Monday. He succeeds Georgi Glouchkov, who stepped down after 15 years at the helm and three terms in office.
All 166 delegates present took part in the first round of voting. Papazov received 67 votes, followed by Orlin Atanasov with 52 and Nickolay Rashkov with 46, while one ballot was declared invalid. Papazov and Atanasov advanced to a runoff.
In the second round, Papazov defeated Atanasov by 93 votes to 67, with 161 votes cast.
Addressing the delegates following his election, Papazov said the task ahead would be difficult and that he believed in his ability to deliver. “I expect proposals from all of you. I cannot run the federation alone, and I will not run it alone,” he said, adding that he was willing to work with anyone to achieve the best possible outcome.
“I have no doubts about my abilities or my contacts,” Papazov noted. He said that the only way for Bulgarian basketball to move forward was to stand truly united. “Coaches are my priority. Their training depend on us. I want Bulgarian coaches to have the opportunity to pursue their dreams. I want to lead in a way that wins over those who supported my opponents today,” he added.
